Setting an Intention

In yoga last week, I set an intention that I’d never set before. If you’re not familiar with yoga or setting intentions in yoga, the best explanation I’ve found is from MindBodyGreen,

An intention is bringing your attention and awareness to a quality or virtue you wish to cultivate for your practice both on and off of your mat.

For many years now, I’ve been very focused on pushing myself to do more.  Be stronger. Work harder. Move faster.  So my intentions have always been based on those ideas.

But last week, out of what seemed like nowhere, this is what came to my mind when setting my intention.

Be graceful.

And it’s still ruminating in my mind, ready to set the pace for the new year.

What it meant for me last week and what it means for me in this new context is:

Taking a step back and reinforcing the work that’s already been done.

The kind of beauty that comes from a relaxed confidence.

Acceptance of my place in the universe, like the feeling that you get when you’re under the stars.

Embodying the dignity and kindness that comes with confidence and acceptance.
