Travel Baking

I frequently seem to want to take on a complicated baking project while traveling. It’s an odd thing to do, to be sure, but that’s when I have time and maybe plan to see family who I want to treat with an incredible and delicious baked good. It definitely require some creative planning and inventive use of limited kitchen supplies which I do truly enjoy.

A teapot full of tiramisu

It’s a bit rough but I did it! I posted more pictures and a little info previously but I made this in a very tiny kitchen while drinking too many margaritas. This was for my own birthday so I spent it doing things I love. 😂🍋‍🟩

My attempts at lady fingers failed spectacularly and I think I had a really tough time using a balloon as a mold and popping. I don’t really know how I pulled this off in the end.

Hot Cocoa Bombs with Homemade Marshmallow

When possible, I’ve started traveling with my KitchenAid mixer. If we drive somewhere and I think I might want to do some baking, I just load it up along with some other necessities.

I’d seen hot cocoa bombs online sometime before this and wanted to bring some to treat family. Naturally, I also wanted to try making my own marshmallows from scratch. It was fun and I don’t have a finished picture so I guess they were a hit and gotten consumed quickly.

King Cakes

Well, obviously if it’s Mardi Gras season, I’m baking king cakes no matter where I am. This ones a lot easier for me since I’ve made them so many times!

Bûche De Noël

I’ve done travel Bûche De Noël a few times in a few different ways. It’s always such a hit and such a pretty holiday dessert that I keep making it.

Sometimes I’ve created the cake and filling in advance and then only iced and decorated it at my destination, other times I’ve made the whole thing at a relatives house. I don’t think I’ve made the cake itself at a vacation rental but I definitely have done prep work or decorations at Airbnb’s so that I have more time to relax and socialize with friends and family once we arrive at their house.

Crystal Ball Birthday Cake

Easily the most extravagant travel backing challenge (and the most dangerous!). It was so hard to get that crystal ball to get into a ball. I tried the balloon method and it just exploded molten sugar all over the kitchen. I bought moulds but they weren’t made for that temperature either and I finally worked out making my own mould. On the inside are some pre-bought macarons that represent health, wealth and happiness!
